A Heroic Canine Saves a Navy Veteran’s Life in Afghanistan and Finds a Forever Home

During his deployment in Afghanistan, this man formed a special bond with Blue, a black Labrador who was an expert at detecting improvised explosive devices. Together, they participated in more than 300 combat missions between 2011 and 2012. Although he had to leave Blue when his deployment ended, the former marine never forgot about him and decided to adopt the loyal dog. He credits Blue with helping him feel comfortable while serving overseas. For the past six years, he has been reaching out to different military branches and charitable organizations in an effort to be reunited with his cherished companion.

The profession came naturally to Blue, and on his debut mission, he stumbled upon a bomb that could have cost the entire platoon their lives. This heroic act led to his adoption by a Navy veteran who couldn’t be more grateful for his life-saving companion.

In the present day, Kang expressed his gratitude towards Blue by stating that he had earned the trust and admiration of his entire platoon. Kang was immensely grateful to Blue for ensuring their safety during every mission. He even made a promise to his loyal partner one night during their deployment in Afghanistan.

Kang recounted a heartwarming tale: “I said to him, ‘There’s no way for us to repay you for all that you’ve done for me and my crew in Afghanistan.’ So instead of fighting and gathering explosives, I’m going to give you a cozy home where you can relax all day long.’ After Kang returned from his deployment, Blue was relocated and they lost touch. However, the soldier never forgot his promise and informed Wendy that she was his fiancée at the time. One of her aspirations was to adopt Blue as soon as she finished her military service.”

Kang and his trusted companion Blue are both members of the Duluth Police Department’s K-9 unit. Blue has been by Kang’s side for eleven years now and has become a beloved member of their family, which includes two kids, five dogs, and two cats. Earlier this year, Blue was diagnosed with cancer after a tumor was discovered in his mouth. Fortunately, the tumor was benign, and Blue is now living a peaceful life where he enjoys giving hugs and spending time with his family.

Despite this health scare, Kang decided to enter Blue into the 2020 American Humane Hero Dog Awards. The duo is now semi-finalists in the military dog category, and Kang could not be prouder of his loyal partner.

This highlights the profound impact that animals can have on people’s lives, especially in challenging and dangerous situations. The Navy veteran’s determination to bring Blue home demonstrates the strong bond that can form between humans and animals, transcending boundaries and overcoming adversity.
